Stoos Village: Klingenstock to Fronalpstock Ridge Hike
Getting to Stoos Is Part of the Experience
Before reaching the trail, you will already have experienced part of the adventure. Stoos is reached on the world’s steepest funicular, the Stoosbahn, connecting Schwyz with the village at about 1,300 metres. Its cylindrical cabins pass through three tunnels while climbing roughly 743 metres—an experience worth the journey in itself.
On arrival, you enter a genuine mountain village without the noise of cars. In spring and summer, green meadows surround its traditional wooden houses.
The Ascent: From Stoos to Klingenstock
From Stoos you can either hike about 4 kilometres uphill to Klingenstock, gaining around 640 metres in 1.5 to 2 hours, or take the chairlift directly to the summit and save your energy for the most scenic section—the ridge trail.
Those hiking up will find the final section steeper and more demanding than it first appears. At Klingenstock—the highest point of the route—the reward is immediate: a magnificent panorama and the first glimpse of Lake Uri among dramatic rock formations.
A long table and large wooden benches at the summit provide the perfect place to rest and enjoy the view before beginning the main ridge section.
The Ridge Trail: The Heart of the Experience
This is the section that makes the hike one of Switzerland’s most famous. The trail between Klingenstock and Fronalpstock follows the ridge for roughly 3 kilometres. It is carefully maintained with wooden and metal steps, chains and protective barriers at the most exposed points, although slopes on both sides can be very steep.
The trail is rated moderate and is not suitable for anyone uncomfortable with heights. Most people with average fitness can complete it, and older children can walk it with responsible adults.
What makes the ridge exceptional is its uninterrupted scenery: deep valleys on one side and famous peaks such as Grosser and Kleiner Mythen on the other. On clear days, several Swiss lakes can be seen from a single point—why the trail is often described as offering a “360-degree view” over the heart of Switzerland.
Several prepared rest points along the route let you pause, catch your breath and take in the scenery.
Reaching Fronalpstock: The Final Lake Lucerne View
As Fronalpstock approaches, the goal looks close—the two summits are only about 3 kilometres apart and Fronalpstock is slightly lower. Yet the final half hour brings an unexpectedly steep climb before the summit.
This is the reason Fronalpstock is so famous: one of Switzerland’s finest views of Lake Lucerne, combining blue water, green forests and surrounding Alpine peaks. For many hikers, this is the highlight of the entire journey.
At the summit there is a mountain restaurant, a small goat enclosure and a children’s play area—an ideal place to rest, enjoy a meal or hot drink and take in the view before descending.

Returning: Options for Every Energy Level
From Fronalpstock, you have several options:
Take the chairlift directly down to Stoosin two stages via the middle station—the fastest and easiest choice. Hike down via the Chänzeli trail about 4.3 kilometres with roughly 611 metres of descent, taking around 75 minutes for those who want to complete the route entirely on foot. A middle option:: walk to the middle station, then take the final chairlift section—useful if you are beginning to feel tired.
After returning to Stoos, it is a short 10-to-15-minute walk through the village to the funicular for the descent to Schwyz.
Practical Information
Shorter route (using the lifts for ascent and descent and walking only the ridge): about 4.5 kilometres, around 400 metres of elevation change and approximately two hours.
Full route (without using lifts, from the car park and back): about 13 kilometres, roughly 1,000 metres of ascent and descent, and 5 to 5.5 hours.
Best Season: June to October, when the trail is free of snow and safe to walk.
Difficulty: Moderate. Proper hiking footwear is essential, and some exposed sections require confidence with heights.
Timing Tip: Start early, especially on summer weekends, as the funicular and mountain trails become busy later in the day.
