Switzerland’s most beautiful waterfall valley

In the heart of the Bernese Oberland, 795 metres above sea level, Lauterbrunnen opens into one of Switzerland’s most dramatic landscapes. Its name refers to the many springs that descend from the surrounding cliffs, and the valley is widely known as the Valley of 72 Waterfalls.

The valley is framed by major Alpine peaks, including the Eiger and Jungfrau. Its relatively flat floor makes it easy to explore on foot among meadows, traditional farms and mountain streams. The municipality also includes Wengen, Mürren, Gimmelwald, Stechelberg and Isenfluh, while Lauterbrunnen village remains the main transport hub for exploring both sides of the valley.

Best Waterfalls and Attractions in Lauterbrunnen

Staubbach Falls The valley’s most recognisable landmark drops 297 metres from the cliff directly behind the village. It is only a short walk from Lauterbrunnen railway station and can be viewed free of charge. In summer, a path behind part of the waterfall may open when conditions allow. The flow is usually strongest in spring during the snowmelt and after heavy rain.

Trümmelbach Falls Ten glacier-fed waterfalls thunder through tunnels and caverns inside the mountain. Walkways, stairs and a tunnel lift provide access to different sections of this remarkable natural system. The sound, spray and narrow rock passages make Trümmelbach a very different experience from the open waterfalls elsewhere in the valley.

Mürrenbach Falls One of the valley’s many waterfalls, Mürrenbach can be seen near Stechelberg and from the cable-car route towards Gimmelwald and Mürren. Keep your camera ready because the best view from the moving cable car passes quickly.

Best Time to Visit Lauterbrunnen

Spring (April–June): Waterfalls are at their most powerful as the snow melts and the meadows begin to bloom.

Summer (July–August): The best conditions for hiking and reaching high villages such as Mürren and Gimmelwald. The path behind Staubbach Falls is also often open, depending on conditions.

Autumn: There are fewer visitors, and autumn colours add a different character to the valley.

Winter: The valley becomes a peaceful winter landscape, while Mürren and Wengen serve as popular ski destinations.

How to Get to Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is a short train ride from Interlaken Ost and is a key transport hub for the Jungfrau Region. A day trip is enough to see Staubbach Falls and walk through part of the valley, but staying for two or three nights gives you time for Trümmelbach Falls, Wengen, Mürren and the higher viewpoints without rushing.
